AOBA Announces Retirement of President/Chief Executive Officer

News,

WASHINGTON, DC – The Apartment and Office Building Association of Metropolitan Washington, the leading membership organization representing commercial office building and multi-family residential real estate in the Washington, D.C. area, announced today that its long-serving President/CEO, Margaret “Peggy” Jeffers, will step down from her position in January 2025, once a successor has joined the Association. The organization also announced that it is initiating a search to identify a new leader.

An expert in association management, Jeffers has served as President/CEO of AOBA since 1990. Prior to her role as CEO, Peggy served as AOBA's Assistant General Counsel after earning her law degree from American University's Washington College of Law while working as AOBA's Office Manager.

Peggy directs a staff of fifteen and a $4.4 million budget in support of the Association's owners and managers of 440,000 apartment homes and 176 million square feet of office space in the Washington Metropolitan area, as well as 180 companies that provide products and services to owner/manager members. AOBA is federated with the Building Owners and Managers Association, International (BOMA) and the National Apartment Association (NAA).

Under Peggy's leadership, the for-profit, subsidiary corporation, AOBA Alliance, Inc., was formed in 2000. Today, AOBA Alliance, Inc. is the largest energy aggregation group in the area with over seven hundred megawatts under contract.

In 2018, with support from the AOBA Board of Directors, Peggy launched the 501(C)(3), AOBA Education Foundation (AEF). AEF is focused on promoting careers in building engineering and maintenance.

Founded in 1974, AOBA’s mission is to protect and enhance the value of its members' investments through effective leadership and advocacy, information exchange, and professional development.

“It has been an honor to lead AOBA through 35 years of growth and evolution,” said Jeffers.

“Peggy Jeffers has dedicated herself to advancing AOBA’s mission for the last 45 years and has played a critical role in shaping AOBA into the organization that it is today,” said AOBA Board Chair, Mark Benedetti. “Peggy’s tireless commitment through challenges and growth has positioned our organization for continued success after her retirement. We appreciate and honor her years of dedication to AOBA and her commitment to ensuring a smooth transition in the months ahead.”

AOBA has formed a search committee led by Board Chair-elect Jared Gigliotti to oversee the process and has retained executive search firm Vetted Solutions to coordinate the search. The search will commence in late summer, with the goal of having a new CEO identified by the new year.

“The board of directors of AOBA recognizes the critical importance of this position to the organization's long-term health, and we are well prepared for this transition. We will keep our membership updated on the progress of this search through announcements on the association's website and other online communications channels,” said Mark Benedetti, AOBA Board Chair.
