CFC - EPA 608 Certification
The Federal Clean Air Act, Section 608, requires anyone who services, maintains, repairs or disposes of appliances and equipment containing regulated refrigerant be certified in proper refrigerant handling techniques. The EPA also restricts the sale of regulated refrigerants to certified technicians only. Technicians who violate these provisions may be fined, lose their certification, and may be required to appear in Federal Court.
This certification course includes four sections for the first-time test-takers and second-time test-takers in the community:
- Section 1 you learn the names and the dates that apply to the technicians working on refrigerant appliances. Finally, you master the rules that a technician needs to follow to stay within the law and not harm the ozone and the stratosphere.
- Section 2 covers the test and instruction for you to be able to describe what a Type I appliance is, and how to identify the type. You master the procedures for recovering and servicing type I appliances.
- Section 3 includes the test and instruction for you to be able to describe what a high-pressure system is and proper evacuating rates. You learn about leak rates and safety procedures. EPA mechanical equipment (Type II certification)
- Section 4 contains the test and instruction for you to be able to describe what is a Type III. Also, you master the procedures for recovering and servicing Type III appliances.
For Testing:
- Attendees need to have proof of ID which will be shown to proctor, the testing will be done through a computer so the computer will need to have a camera Test takers are required to provide an EPA card, showing certifications they currently hold, if any exist.
- Applicants may re-test three times before instruction is required.
- There will be a closed book exam at the conclusion of the course.
Course Prep:
To prepare for your exam, it is important that you study some on your own before the class. Students will get emails from instructor with assignments to prepare for the course.
The course will use videos and Zoom meetings. Here are a few key details that you should know:
- Meeting dates: August 6, 8, 13, 15 (Tuesdays and Thursdays)
- Testing dates: August 24, 25 (with August 31 as a backup)
- Meeting time: 2:00-3:30 PM Eastern time
- Students will get emails from instructor with assignments to prepare for the course.
Meet the Instructor
Julio Herrera is the co-founder of AirCon Academy and an experienced vocational technical skills instructor for over 30 years. He served in the US NAVY, where he acquired necessary skills in maintaining and servicing various types of air conditioning systems, air handlers, chillers, hydraulics/pneumatics systems, pumps, and boilers.
After the Navy, he decided to continue his career as a building engineer with Washington Metropolitan Air Transit Authority (WMATA) where he developed a passion for teaching. He felt strongly about sharing and passing his knowledge to others and taught HVAC systems, Refrigeration, Electrical Motors, Schematics, Basic Electricity, and Heat Pumps, as well, as prep courses for CFC Universal and R410-A and other refrigerants to over 9,000 students during his teaching career.
