DHCD Releases Report on Rent Control in DC

On June 7, the DC Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) released the first comprehensive study of rental units subject to rent control since the 2000 Nathan Associates report commissioned by the Control Board.  At the time of the 2000 Nathan Associates report, an estimated 101,500 of the 160,900 rental housing units in DC were subject to rent control.  Per DHCD’s "A Rent Control Report for the District of Columbia,"  there are currently 9,352 primarily multifamily rental apartment buildings with 119,288 units in the District.  Of that total, 4,818 properties and 79,145 housing units are potentially subject to the rent control scheme.  The report also includes a description of the rent-controlled housing stock by Ward, as well as property and owner characteristics.
