International Green Construction Code Released
The International Code Council released the long-anticipated 2012 International Green Construction Code (IgCC) in late March. The IgCC was authored by a group of organizations, including the ICC, the American Institute of Architects, ASHRAE, and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The 2012 IgCC offers a new code baseline that can be tailored by state and local governments to apply the processes and operational characteristics of green buildings to the millions of buildings that are designed, constructed and renovated to meet minimum code. Maryland has adopted the IGCC at the State level, which makes its adoption an option for counties and localities (state law allows them to adopt less stringent provisions than those found in the IGCC). DC has recently begun its consideration of the IGCC. Virginia is expected to take it up, as well, in the codes revision cycle that begins later this year. AOBA will be monitoring and actively participating in code developments throughout the region.
