Minimum Wage Rates Increase in Most Maryland Counties

The state minimum wage rate in Maryland increased to $10.10 per hour effective July 1.  Although this is the final year of phased-in rate increases at the state level, there will be pressure to further increase the minimum wage rate at the 2019 General Assembly session.

The minimum wage required to be paid by employers in Montgomery County varies based on the employer’s number of employees.  The minimum wage for employers with 51 or more employees increased to $12.25 per hour effective July 1.  Employers with fewer than 51 employees must pay a minimum wage of at least $12.00 per hour.

The minimum wage rate in Prince George’s County remains unchanged at $11.50 per hour.  The county minimum wage laws do not apply to an employee who is exempt from the minimum wage requirements of state or federal law or to an employee who is younger than age 19 and is employed for no more than 20 hours per week.
